Being given the role of best man is a great honour and should be treated as such. Emily Martin looks at how to carry out the role to the best of your ability.
Being appointed the role of best man in a wedding is an immense honour and reflection of how highly esteemed your relationship with the groom is.
In being given this title the best man has been given a key role in the biggest day of the groom’s life so it is important that he is prepared and knows what is expected of him because it’s up to him to ensure the day runs smoothly.
Two key jobs seem to stand out when the title of best man is mentioned, and these are organising the bachelor party and writing a knock out speech for the wedding reception.
Organising a momentous stag do is the first important duty that comes with being the best man and it’s up to him to provide a funfilled send off that the groom will remember throughout his married life.
Contrasted against the fun of the bachelor party, the all important speech is by far one of the most dreaded aspects of being the best man as a great speech should be witty and contain just the right mix of humour and sincerity so that it will have the guests laughing and reminiscing over it fondly once the day is over.
The speech is also the time where the best man can reflect on his friendship with the groom and undoubtedly he will be worrying about whether all of his pre-marital transgressions are going to be divulged to his new in-laws! Nevertheless, the role doesn’t stop at just the stag do and speech; there are also certain other behind the scene responsibilities that come with the position.
These responsibilities entail becoming the groom’s right hand man during the wedding period, available to help him with any tasks in the lead up to the big day and to take the burden and stress off his shoulders.
As head of the groom’s party the best man is also responsible for keepings the other groomsmen in line and ensuring that they turn up to events such as suit fittings.
On the day, a good best man should be a calming presence for the groom offering encouragement and guidance to help him overcome his nerves and ensuring that the only thing he need worry about is saying his vows.
However, this means that the day for the best man probably won’t be so stress-free because from start to finish there are a whole list of things that through being awarded the role he is now responsible for.
Duties for him will include ensuring that the groom arrives at the ceremony atleast half an hour prior to its start time, looking after the essential rings, checking that the groomsmen are well organised and making sure that the day goes to plan.
The role of best man, therefore, seems a rather stressful and busy one, nonetheless when you are doing it all for your brother or best friend then it is surely a role that you will enjoy, honour, and cherish for life.
